Death of a School District

As of midnight this morning, the Vader School District was officially written out of existence. After failing three different levy/bond issues, including the final death blow last March, Vader was absorbed into the neighboring Castle Rock school district, the school (yes, THE school--Vader was a K-8 district with only one building) is slated to be demolished soon, and the teachers are all off to other pastures.

I've previously blogged about Vader here, mainly out of a sense of disbelief that any town would voluntarily give up its school. Castle Rock is keeping the option available to build another school in Vader some day, should population trends deem it appropriate.

One wonders if this is the last time we'll see this.

Ryan, the amalgation of school districts is nothing new. In the 1930s and 1940s, there were 2,000+ school districts.

Food for thought.
