The June issue of Edutopia Magazine, from the George Lucas Educational Foundation, has an article about a unique program near Seattle where dog trainer Becky Bishop brings some of her charges to area schools so that kids can read to them. The dogs get more socialization, and the kids get a chance to practice reading aloud to a non-judgmental listener. I've done something similar in my 1st grade classroom with the class pet; it's a neat thing for the reluctant readers.
Edutopia is a neat little magazine available free to anyone who teaches. You can get subscription information at the link above; it’s mail worth getting.
